NaI(Tl) detectors
NaI(Tl) is a great scintillator for high-rate (< 500kcps) counting and precision spectroscopy.
This low-cost scintillator is the work horse of the industry. But it requires some care in packaging and handling when used in mobile devices as it is delicate and sensitive to mechanical and thermal shock.
For portable outdoors applications, a 50mm thick foam packaging is often required for sufficient thermal insulation.
Selection Guide
The detector performance depends on the quality of the NaI(Tl) crystal, the detector construction and the MCA. See also our online selection guide
- For low (50kcps), middle (500kcps), and high (4000kcps) use SiPM/PMT-1000, SiPM/PMT-2000, SiPM/PMT-3000
- SiPM detectors are more compact, easier to use and lower cost.
- In our SiPM detectors the crystal can be replaced in the field without special tools, in case of damage.
- PMT systems deliver somewhat better energy resolution, but are more difficult to gain stabilize.
- Use a PMT system with LED stabilization if it is not possible to recalibrate at least once a month.
Detector Manufacturers
We source detectors and crystals from various manufacturers. Premium detectors come from Alpha Spectra. Standard detectors come from ICC Optics.
